A lot of blood and very sweary. Gets a bit convoluted but Kristoff still spins a good yarn.

"My friends are the hill i die on."
What a way to start 2025! This book definitely isn't affected by the so called sequel curse. If possible this one has even more suspense than the first book. Great writingstyle, surprising plottwists and fully flushed main characters, this story has it all. It will be a long wait till the next installment.....

First off, the first thing you need to be able to accept when reading this book or the first novel in the series is that when reading fiction, especially fantasy fiction, you have to suspend your disbelief and fully embrace the world you're entering into. If you are able to do that and leave behind the nonsense of the real world then you will love these books. I say that because so many people choose to judge the creativity and writing of these books based on some social or political opinion they carry with them in the real world and honestly it is not only a bummer to us readers that wish to escape the bullshit, but also prevents people from reading fun books because of shitty reviews that have nothing to do with the actual story or world created.
With that said this book is fun, exciting, and one hell of a ride. My only disappointment is that I read it so far from the next one coming out. Again if you read fiction to escape the real world occasionally and live in another world for a few hours then welcome to the gruesome, cold, and yet exotic world that is VotD. Prepare to fall in love with villains and root for chaos at times, while hoping for hope itself. Read it!

Well I’m glad that’s over with. This didn’t meet up with the hype as the first one did for me. I jumped to the last 100 pages.
Whoever is making the hardcover sucks my outer binding cracked and tore. It’s a cheaply made hardcover!
I gave it the 3 stars for the characters, the building of this world/realm, Vampires and Jean-Francois(the Marquis/Scribe). That’s all this is where I leave this series no desire, need or anticipation to read anymore.

"to hate the thing that is completing you. to love the thing that is destroying you. what perfect suffering. what hell divine."
this was exquisite. dark, depressing, gory, brutal, heartbreaking - all these things and more. but it also made me laugh out loud, it made me hug the book to my chest (i'm so attached to these characters!) and it made me gasp and run circles around my room at the CRAZY plot-twists.
the platonic bond between dior and gabe is EVERYTHING to me, and i absolutely need as much of their content as jay kristoff is willing to give. but, yet again, i have to say that jean-francois really took the cake for my fav character... i should loathe him (and sometimes i do) but the mouth on that man?? he's actually a comedian. the banter between him and gabe is everything to me.
but jesus, that ending... i need book #3 stat. absolutely insane last 50 pages.
