This was a novel, where The Tattoist of Auswitz was not. For the most part I still really enjoyed this book, but the end was pretty slow and then abrupt. Still, Cilka's life was very interesting, even if much had to be imagined.

I had such high expectations of this book, and it did not disappoint. I thoroughly enjoyed the Tattooist of Auschwitz, and this tied in with that, but you would not have had to read that book to enjoy this one. Cilka is a beautiful character, and so are the other people that she encounters. A heartwarming end to a very sad tale; I was worried as the book began to close that Cilka was not ever going to see anyone that she knew ever again- that she might lose Alexander.

Very tough one to get through emotionally. It’s a follow up to the Tattooist of Auschwitz, and was an equally disturbing journey. Based on a true account of Cilka, who was a political prisoner after being released from Auschwitz. Spoiler warning: very happy these characters got the happiest endings they possibly could have after all they went through.
