This book was a compulsive read. The story borrowed a lot from Great Expectations. The plot had a few twists and turns. At the end, it seemed a bit too contrived, but I still liked it. More than anything , I like how Zafon really stresses how valuable books are. As a reader, this really appeals to me. I would give this one a 4/5.

I was so disappointed by this book! At first i was compelled by the writing and atmosphere of this book. In some was this book was good because it was linked to the Shadow of the wind. It was therefore interesting to read. But apart from that, nothing really happened until the end when so much things happened that its confusing! I didn't get where the author wanted to take us and the purpose of the book. It was also very hard to identify to the main character. There was good gothic elements in this book but they were all mixed up, confusing. This book could have been really good but lots of things were missing. It was a great disappointment for me and I give it 2,5/5

Fizzled out at the end. Good read for those who know and love Barcelona.

Okay I don’t know what I think of this book. Like the writing was beautiful, but the story… it was for me a bit long. And then the creepy end. If the world ended in the book I would not have mind.

There where some great lines in this book, but to be honest I barely remember what I read. During the reading I was zoning out a lot, because I couldn’t really get invested in the story. But still because of the good writing I can see that some people will be really interested in this book. Still it wasn’t really something for me, in the beginning it looked like a romance, but it wasn’t, and at the end it was more like a thriller, but there could’ve been more blood or murderer. So it wasn’t really a thriller for me either.

trochę się nudziłam w połowie

This book did not disappoint, even following the absolutely fantastic Shadow of the Wind. Set a generation before Shadow of the Wind, this book tells the story of David Martin, a writer haunted by great expectations and unfulfilled desires.

Me hizo reír, pensar, ponerme triste...

If I were to judge this book purely on it’s writing, it would easily be a five star. Carlos Ruiz Zafóns has such a magical way of telling stories and I always find it so easy to slip away into whatever world he’s created. Saying that, I didn’t enjoy this book as much as Shadow of the Wind. It was confusing, and to be blunt, I didn’t really see the point of it. It was lowkey all over the place too. But!! I’m still definitely gonna read the rest of the books in this series because although this one lacked in certain areas, Shadow of the Wind was still one of my favourite reads of last year and I would very much like to see where this whirlwind of a story ends up.

Not as good as The Shadow of the Wind, but I still enjoyed this a lot.
