Zafon is a modern master of magical realism. Not standard fare, but worth a try (read book 1 first), if you're game to try something out of your usual wheelhouse.
adventurous

Read it in high school. I remember it was amazing. Can't stop reading even in class.

I was so obsessed with the first book in this series, that this one was a little disappointing. It skewed in the rather strange direction for my tastes.

I'm very confused after reading this. But I can also tell you that it's a good book that's worth reading. Not as good as The Shadow of the Wind, but Zafón's writing makes the story become something special in it's own way.

God this book disappointed me. I really enjoyed Act One, and saw all the traits I loved from Shadow of the Wind taking form. And then things just got really confusing and convoluted, and I felt like I was constantly missing something and not in a fun way.

I think Shadow of the Wind worked so well because the plot was pretty simple on the surface, which allowed for Zafón’s beautiful writing to shine. This novel felt so weighed down with getting the plot across that I couldn’t savor the writing which is where his strengths lie.

This book lacked the magic and heart that made me love the first novel, and I feel had this book not been a follow up to one of my all time favorites it wouldn’t be such an insane letdown.

I love Ruiz Zafon’s writing style and he perfectly reproduced the atmosphere from Shadow of the Wind, gloomy and mysterious with a hint of the supernatural. Would love to read more tales about the souls in the Cemetery of Forgotten Books.

This is another page turner from the author of Shadow of the Wind. I really liked this book, but the ending left too many unanswered questions and was a bit cheesy. Also, is everybody in Barcelona really extremely sarcastic and witty? Most of the characters sound like the same person.
