I like this author, her writing style and development. I prefer to listen to the audio versions because the character names and city names can be confusing, and hearing them pronounced helps me continue with the story. But this narrator is terrible. Her accent is so British that I couldn't even understand the characters names. It was very confusing and took away from the story.
Wish Goodreads had this listed in English.
Excellent book.
Excellent book.
Piti lukea kertaistumalta, niin hyvä tyyli kirjoittajalla. Juonessakin riitti sopivasti käänteitä.
I picked this book up used. I haven't read the author at all, and didn't realize the book was part of an ongoing cast of characters. For me, this book was a decent. mystery...a good story for the most part with0 several optional ways it could have ended. It had a plausible ending but not a "surprise" ending by any means.
My biggest issue was that the characters were flat and uninspired. Really just a "guy wants girl but she thinks he is a louse and he acts louse-y and then she knows it and he knows it and will she give him another chance"?
If the story hadn't paced itself well, and the crime characters weren't compelling, I wouldn't have finished it on the strength of the recurring characters.
I'm not sure I will read another book by this author because it's hard for me to imagine it would be worth it with the wealth of detective series out there.

Trigger warning: Child rape and murder.
I don't know what to say about this one. It's a lot in one sitting. Still very well written. However, the biggest issue why I didn't give this 5 stars is that I got really tired of Huldar acting like Wile E. Coyote with regards to his terrible judgment with regards to women. Plus the ending with what he did to [redacted] I had issues with. Frankly, one wonders how he is going to bounce back from this and be a detective. He just seems all over the place.
"The Reckoning" takes place several months after the events in the first book. Huldar lost his manager role at the police. He's mostly avoided by other cops now and he's given assignments no one else wants to do. When he is tasked with identifying the child who wrote a list of people who were going to die in 10 years (this is found in a time capsule) he decides to use this as a way to worm (that's my word) back into Freyja's life. Freyja is dealing with her own demotion and being stuck at her brother's. She's in a rut and wonders about leaving Children's House when she is asked to help Huldar with his assignment. This is going on while the police are trying to identify two hands that were found in a retired attorney's hot tub.
Huldar got on my nerves. There I said it. He's like the bad decision tree brought to life.
I felt for Freyja a lot in this one. She has a lot thrown at her in this one and she keeps making it clear to Huldar she's not interested, til she is, and then roadblock pops up again. I wish they would leave each other alone frankly.
The other characters in this story were very well developed. Gudlaugur, the newest cop to the police force and the only one that seems to use Huldar for advice was interesting. I was also curious if such a thing that was depicted in this book could actually take place.
The writing was good, but the pace was up and down. I think it's because it took a while to see how everything tied together.
The ending though was a shocker. I just don't know how I feel about it honestly. Things felt very undone and broken.
It takes a while to get going and to see the links between both of these cases, but when the links start to appear, the book gets going.
