If I could rate this higher than 5 stars I absolutely would. I loved everything about this book. Slow burn mlm romance, time travel, memory loss, alternative historic retelling... What isn't here??

The author didn't cut corners when it comes to showing how brutal war is either, not even where children were concerned. I found the writing just to the right side of being absolutely brutal and gut wrenching. It pulled both tears and laughs from me.

What an unforgettable read.

*This review is mainly about what I disliked about this book, but I gave it four stars because I actually liked most of it, but I'll talk less about the positivities.*

This started out really well, I loved the initial world building and everything that happened at the lighthouse. However, after the first few chapters set on the ship, I kept growing more and more confused about everything; the characters and their relationships with each other were indecipherable, and so were the events sometimes. I missed some more substantial relationship development between Joe and Kite, not to mention the other characters... But Joe didn't remember so that was out of the question (I'd thought he would remember, at some point). The past chapters didn't really make up for it, Jem seemed to like Kite and Agatha from the first moment. The way the connection between the three of them was shown frustrated me a lot, and so did the lack of open communication. The lighthouse scene was adorable, I was hoping that Pulley would continue with this subtle but a bit more on-page bonding than her usual style, and then she shattered the whole thing by erasing Joe's memory again... I was extremely disappointed.

Despite all this, I still liked this book and I still found the main concept beautiful and intriguing. I love historical fiction and time travel. I was familiar with Pulley's style of writing romance already, therefore I can't say I expected something different. Only if she included more of open communication and left everything else cryptic & subtle, I would have said it's still totally enjoyable. But not this way. It didn't just mess up the romance, but occasionally made the other storylines frustrating too.

Just to mention a bit of positivity too, I loved most of the main- and secondary characters, despite not understanding them sometimes. Writing unique characters is definitely a great talent of Natasha Pulley!

Hrm. Reading this book felt a lot like my feelings on Palmer's Too Like the Lightning, where I was desperate to see the end but didn't really agree with it when it came.

It was a great read! I hadn't realized I could feel so many flavors of sadness. But I'm not sure if the ends justified the means.
