this should be a tv show (great book but also it should be a tv show)

This book is one of the best books I've read in quite a while. The slow mystery of who the main character is as well as the romance and time-travel plot kept me hooked from the beginning all the way to the end. I finished it less than half an hour ago and I already kind of want to read it again.

3.5/5 porque el final me ha dejado el corazón blandito. La idea es bastante guay, pero creo que la ejecución ha sido innecesariamente larga, aunque también puede ser que sea yo que no soporto leer sobre gente en barcos. Aun así, no está mal.

this is a story I could read over and over and over again and never tire of it! I could live in this universe forever!

surprisingly, the slow-burn love story didn't drive me bonkers - nor did the inevitable confusion of timey-wimey shenanigans (aka piecing together multiple timelines and versions of events) - if anything they made me love this story all-the-more!

this is for sure a new favorite & I am forever in love with Joe and Kite.

3.5
I really love Natasha Pulley’s books. I think this got a little bit too convoluted plot wise for me to fully love it as much as some of her previous works. But I liked the concepts being explored and thought there was some great character work.

Natasha Pulley is one of my favorite living fantasy authors at this point in time so I'm going to be fangirling a bit. As with her earlier books, this one is complex, weaving back and forth in time in a way that's sometimes confusing. It's also well researched and the characters are complex and vivid. The story is a convoluted mystery that somehow all comes together. Fantasy elements are what's needed for the story. Warning: human slavery (not specified by race but several enslaved people in the story are non-white or of mixed race); brief and necessary-to-the-plot but nasty references to torture.

Random things I love about this book:
The details of live on an early 19th century military sailing ship.
The frequent whiplash changes of a certain character's behavior that end up making sense in the end.
Pulley's detailed building of an alternate England ruled by France.
Pulley's continuing fondness for having at least one unusual pet in each story.
Joe's love for children.
A certain excellent young lieutenant serving under Kite.
