This book was as unexpected and mysterious as the synopsis promised. I had a great time trying to unravel what was actually going on. I think Pulley did a good job of giving enough that the reader isn’t clueless but not so much that the whole story is predictable.

Yes, it is possible to guess certain “twists” but I chalk that up to the author plotting it out well and not lazy writing. You’re given bits and pieces along the way that act as building blocks. Even when I did know things, I wasn’t able to piece together the entire story.

It was enjoyable until the very end. Definitely the kind of book I’d reread in order to catch the things I didn’t notice the first time around.

The one hiccup for me - and this was an audiobook thing - was not always catching the time changes and being a bit lost from time to time. It was an easy fix though and an unlikely problem when reading physically.

I was really excited for this book. Pulley's books are almost always much more about the character than about the plot until the very end when all is explained. But this time it was in a bad way. It was so very confusing and I didn't understand about 70% of this book. It was so very slow if I wasn't trying to reach a reading goal this month I would perhaps not have finished it at all.

I loved the characters so much especially Kite was amazing and his relationship with Joe was great to read about but the plot was just not it. To many politics that I didn't understand and I feel were not really explained. Perhaps because it is so based on history that no in-depth explanation seems needed. If you read a fantasy and everything is made up the politics are explained in full and I far prefer that. Mostly because I know nothing about any history ever.

Speculative historical fiction with added time travel plus the story jumping between years within a particular era. I can understand the jumping around between years as the reader is encouraged to make links between events, but it did make my brain hurt!
