Steampunk may not be for me. The last one I read did not involve a flying ship but a flying school, and that worked well with my imagination. The descriptions in the beginning gave me a slight headache and confused me. The strange flying creatures with the flying ship threw me way off. I listened to almost an hour of the audiobook and decided to move onto something that would make more sense to me.

This was such a great adventure. I didn't see the twists coming at all, and I was kept on my toes. I listened to the audio book for most of it, and the narration was great. I didn't realize it was the first in a series until I was almost done. It did not end on a cliffhanger, but I look forward to continuing the story. I found Kate unlikable for much of the book, but she ended up growing and changing in good ways.

One of my earliest profound reading experiences, Airborn was handed to me when I was in elementary school and I devoured it. Upon seeing the cover once more at my bookselling job, I was instantly transported back to the world of the story. The gas-powered airships, the airborne piracy, the strange, mystical creatures and the tantalizing mystery behind them... this book had it all for 8-year-old eveningreverie. And, according to many other contemporary readers, it still holds up remarkably well.
