Spin off from The Tatooist of Auschwitz and, in a similar vein, surprisingly heart-warming.

This story follows one of the side characters in the famous Tattooist of Auschwitz by the same author. It shines the light on a far less studied and discussed topic of the reality of life for those rescued from the Nazis but subjected to soviet rule. It is an important work giving a partially fictional illustration of the horrors faced by some in the soviet gulags that were arguably as bad as those Hitler's Nazi party created but without the final solution.

Heather Morris writes beautifully and does not stray away from the uncomfortable aspects of her stories. She does not show her protagonists as perfect which I feel is an authentic and necessary thing for works covering this topic.

I look forward to her other works

This book is a mixture of fiction and non fiction. It is very hard hitting and made me emotional at times.
The writing in this book is phenomenal. It opened my eyes to the amount of torture that people faced.
A must read book

This book was absolutely incredible!!! I didn’t want to put it down! I cannot wait for Heather Morris to write another book!!!!

If you have read the Tattoist of Auschwitz then you will know the style of writing to expect. It’s a mix between non-fiction and romanticism incorporated for a story, based on as much research as possible by the author. Definitely would recommend to read as a female reader - personally I enjoy reading about war-related books but find that often there is an element missing of what happened to those many women that were also part of the war? I feel like this was a great account of life as a female in a prisoner camp.

Overly simplistic writing for my tastes.

This is a historical fiction loosely based off a real individual assumed to be Cilka.  It starts with her brief freedom from Auschwitz, only to immediately be thrown into a soviet prison camp and sentenced to live there for 15 years.

This story is put together from various accounts of what life was like in the soviet prison camps.  It's shocking and hard to imagine individuals having already suffered years at german concentration camps, only to be thrown into sometimes worse conditions with the soviets.

Seeing this book as a collection of historical stories, facts, and both real and fictional characters, I highly recommend this read!
