Berserk is a story that I've wanted to read for a very long time due to its notoriety.  I wish I hadn't waited so long.  While I find that Guts isn't lovable yet, I am dying to continue this story because of the masterful artwork.  Kentaro Muira was incredible and I am sadden by his passing.

Not for the faint of heart.
Gripping, dark and yet couldn’t get enough. The first volume set up characters and major events well, without giving too much away - keeping the air of mystery and intrigue.

The art is outstanding, and lives up to all of the hype it was given when it was recommended to me.

A must read.

I think this is the perfect introduction to Grimdark fantasy. It's hopeless, filled with violence, death and demons, and shows promise in the continuation of the series and the brutality accompanying it. While there are still moments of light brevity throughout, a staple of manga as a whole, I don't think it detracts from the overall experience of Berserk.

This is a beautiful edition of the book that deserves a home on any shelf and is packed with the content you would want from such a pretty book. It's most definitely Grimdark and offers as a nice introduction to that style of fantasy, one that I haven't found so effectively captured in other Grimdark labeled books. That does mean there's not a whole lot of happy following the main character Guts and all the people he meets along the way.

While there's the occasional light hearted moment, there's a lot of grief throughout and that's largely what the draw for this seems to be. At the moment Guts seems like a jerk but the start of the Golden Age arc seems to begin addressing why he is like he is. There's also a lot of action with plenty of stunning shots that make it identifiably Berserk

This is the perfect start to Grimdark Fantasy to really sink your teeth into what it is as a whole. I just hope you like a lot of black ink used in your scenes.
