I had been avoiding reading Berserk for years since I first heard about it whilst in High School because I'm not a fan of grimdark stories. They turn me off more than anything because that simply is not how my boat floats.
However, after hearing so much about this series particularly recently with the sad death of Kentaro Miura, I finally decided to pick it up. And once I did I couldn't put it down. The art style ofc is gorgeous and though the story started off as a kind of monster of the week thing, I think it really picks up and finds its stride in the Guardians of Desire chapters and that's when I really got into Berserk.
I'm not somebody who believes certain dark subject matter should never be handled in books so I do go into this knowing exactly what awaits me. I know it'll be horrifying and disturbing but that is exactly the point. The world of Berserk is a dark place where bad things happen and none of it is glorified which I think is great as I feel many works that do depict darker subject matter can often times fall into a weird sort of glorification without intending to. What really sets Berserk apart though is the overhanging sense of hope despite all the terribleness around somebody. And that is something that I believe to be so important.
I am looking forward to continuing with this series through all the good times and bad that await in its pages.
