I had watched a part of the 90s anime and recognised the first apostle scene. Having gone through this first volume I do not know why they left the elf character out. He serves as good counterbalance to Guts. The story is intriguing and Guts is interesting to follow. A worth world to get into

Pretty great start to a series, I'm excited to read the rest. This is dark fantasy through and through with lots of nasty monsters but a cute little fairy elf named Puck for light relief (pretty sure he's gonna end up as my favorite character, I love him already). This series is renowned for its brutal, gory action and boy does it deliver on that, this definitely has my favorite combat scenes from any of the action-centric manga I've tried so far. I will say I don't fully understand the significance of the opening scene, maybe it's important for Guts' character or maybe it was just to set the tone, I'm not sure, but other than that I had no issues with this and I'm excited to continue with the series.

Giving this a review after reading a few more volumes but I remember after finishing the first voluming not really understanding Guts and feeling like he was a really hard main character to rally behind. I knew there was a history there but since I didn't have more information to go off of I really found myself not really enjoying his perspective and spent a lot of time just trying to make sense of this world.
