Solidly okay first volume. I can’t quite tell if this just isn’t my cup of tea or if I need to read further in the story to really understand the appeal. I’m interested in reading further, but we’ll see if I actually follow through on that. Either way though, I’m glad to have gotten a taste of what this beloved series is all about.

Format-Physical

I see why this is such a well loved manga series now. Dark and gritty and disturbing, Berserk is in a league of its own in the grimdark fantasy category. While there are a few brief moments of humor (mostly because of our sidekick character, Puck) most of this book is wall to wall action. Guts is a hard protagonist to get behind at the beginning of this volume but when you start learning his backstory, you start to understand why he is the way he is.

I look forward to continuing this series. I have several of the deluxe editions already on hand so I may binge through them sometimes soon.
