Where it all starts. This covers all of the Black Swordsman arc, and the first chapter of The Golden Age arc, so volumes 1-3 of the paperbacks. If you've seen the 3 movie series on Netflix, or watched the 1990's anime, basically all of this material will be new to you. I cannot comment on the 2016 anime since I've not seen it, but I believe it may cover some of this material.
The book itself looks very handsome on a shelf. The faux-leather cover and red-embossed title looks nice. The book itself is large and as such a little unwieldy. It has a ribbon bookmarker to help you keep track of your location or favorite panel. The pages are bound for reading right to left, and the binding is generally good for the artwork, though of course there's some 2 page spreads that get pinched in the middle. I've definitely seen worse comic books than this in that regard, though.
Basically, if you're like me and already love the series, this would be a great edition to own. If you're wanting to try out the series maybe go with the trade paperbacks, unless you know you're going to enjoy the violence, gore, and profanity that the series is known for.
As for Berserk itself, if you're a big fan of horror and Manga, give the series a try. There's many popular video game and movie franchises that have drawn some inspiration from Miura's artwork. You've maybe heard the series has been dragging along - it has been been going since the late 1980's - but the early chapters are a lot of fun and the characters are memorable.
Trigger warning: a lot of violence, gore, profanity, and nudity. In this volume, at the end, there's a scene of a sexual assault. Definitely not for children and many adults.
