Gets kinda repetitive during the initial setup but once we see the Godhand I'm hooked. Can't wait to continue reading these!!!

A great start to the series; Chapter 1 pulls a nice red herring of casting Guts as the ultimate edge-lord stand in (opening as it does) but steadily Miura hints at the emotional depths of the character which reveals itself across the chapters collected in the first deluxe volume. The first few chapters of The Black Swordsman arc ably set the stage but the longer mini-arc (The Guardians of Desire) really expands the world and the deep horrific tragedy it finds itself in. Can’t wait to find out how it all develops, the volume ending on the first chapter of the legendary The Golden Age arc. Needless to say; stunning artwork. Probably some of the best I’ve experienced from a mangaka. No wonder it’s generally viewed as being unadaptable.
