Would have been a 5 star but I didn’t like
the surprise pregnancy trope
during the epilogue.

This book was really good and sweet ! It’s a slow-burn paranormal romance between a little human/elf and a half-merman. The story is really slow-building but it’s well done according to the characters.

Elara is known for the beautiful magical pieces that she crafts, but she’s also capable to built dangerous devices. While the magical mafia is interested in her talent, she already has things to fear and should not be allured by the beautiful voice calling her each time she sees him. Levi is a half-merman cast aside by his people who prefers to live in the human world, using his singing talent to survive, but he wasn’t prepared for his meeting with Elara and the profound temptation that she will represent.

Elara is a really sweet person, using her talent to help people by creating pieces embedded with magic. Her past experience with golem scares her and she doesn’t want to see her work being used for violence, but when sprites are threatened she realises that some things need to change. Being half-breed is not easy for a merman, rejected all his life by his mother’s people, Levi holds lots of bitterness against mer and fears the implication of his magic on his relation with Elara.

A wonderful story, with exceptional characters, I just love Sidney and her brother Josh, and also Levi’s roommates Jordan and Grim. Can’t wait to see what will happen next.

This was a really good story but it could’ve definitely been told over several books for sure! I would have been there for a longer, more detailed version. However, it’s still phenomenal. Really good conflict, great friendships, dialogue, romance, and magical world building. I loved getting to know Levi and Elara as well as their friends.

The epilogue is in Levi’s voice which doesn’t feel quite right and is very strangely expository. Feels like it was tacked on and doesn’t belong to the rest of the story. Add the reveal at their wedding that Elara is pregnant (which is a very common epilogue for romance novels). It doesn’t make sense for a fairly modern couple who was using condoms the whole time and talked about waiting on children. I feel like the epilogue could’ve been cut off.

And there’s a great short story that seems to lead to a book afterwards but no further information on when that book would come out! Really disappointing to not include that info. Also, not on the author’s website.
