I was skeptical going in despite loving some of his other books because YA is really hit or miss for me as a trans woman in my mid 30s but I loved it! It’s YA superheroes with a gay sort-of love triangle. I found the romance aspects rather endearing, perhaps because queer romance is so fresh versus all the well-played tropes of cishet teen romance. Protagonist is a gay 17 year old boy with what reads to me as very authentically portrayed ADHD, as well as PTSD from one parent dying. He has an adorable gay best friend, and an equally adorable lesbian couple as the other close friends.

While it definitely becomes serious/perilous by the end if the story, much of it is absolutely hilarious. I cackled reading it so many times, because the protagonist says and does so many ridiculous and/or embarrassing things and is adorably awkward. All the friends pair nicely with his personality.

While it didn’t move me in the way his “The House in the Cerulean Sea” or “Under the Whispering Door” did, I still found it very therapeutic to read. I wish I’d had such wonderful queer friends growing up, and been able to be so out and loved as well

This is definitely my new comfort read!
Seriously, I loved this so much, and it was so relatable, (as a queer man with ADHD who loves superheroes), and I am so thankful that I listened to this as an audiobook.

Can't wait for the sequel!

I didn’t expect to laugh so much, at one point I was crying laughing at the inane teen-ness and vanity of the characters. Definitely directed to older teens and adults, it’s a light story with fun vibes that lets you just let go of life and settle into teen drama with superheroes.
