I almost always love a multigenerational buddy comedy, especially when there's a mystery involved. The pacing on this one was not my favorite. It was hard to stay engaged when the storylines changed so quickly, but I did certainly enjoy it.
This was a funny/sweet/cute book. Really enjoyed their adventure and unlikely friendship
Thank you Berkley for an eARC of this very funny and entertaining read!
Synopsis: When twenty-one-year-old Tanner’s dreams get crushed after a terrible injury, she loses her soccer scholarship and is forced to take a gap year from school. Needing money and a place of her own, she takes a job as a live-in caregiver for an elderly woman named Louise. The two have absolutely nothing in common and at first, spend their days ignoring one another. That is until Tanner is watching the news and sees a lead in a jewelry heist case nearly four decades later and the woman looks like a carbon copy of Louise. Around the same time, Louise gets a call from someone from her past causing her to wake Tanner up in the middle of the night, pack up, and leave town. What starts as a road trip on the run turns into an odd but special friendship you will not be able to get enough of.
Thoughts: While the concept of this book was quite bizarre and nothing like I read before, I could not get enough of the story! It was unique, charming, witty and funny. I loved Tanner and Louise’s unexpected friendship, the suspense embedded into the plot and all the unexpected twists. While the chapters primarily alternate between Tanner and Louise’s POVs, we do get to hear from the perspectives of each of their families as well as the detective on the case, which added depth to the story. Also, the ending was GREAT! As this was my first Colleen Oakley book, I need to decide which from her backlist I’m going to read next.

This was cute and quick and the narrator (Libby) was good. I read it b/c of the reviews but it was mostly forgettable for me so not sure I would recommend it.
What an absolute joy! As I started to read about Tanner and Louise’s unlikely friendship, I thought it would be an inspirational, lighthearted story about them learning more about themselves. While that did happen, there were also lots of surprises thrown in along the way (mobsters! Mistaken identity! Incompetent government officials!) which made the book fly by. Absolutely recommend to any fans of Thursday Murder Club, or Driving Miss Norma.
A fun, unlikely pair, that happened to be quite the quirky story.
“She was so young. She had no idea how long life was. People always said life was short, but it wasn’t. Not really. You could cram so many different lives into one. Be so many different people.”
