This new book in dan Abnett's Gaunt's Ghosts series also heralds the start of a new arc in the series, known as "The Saint". This becomes clear in later books. In this excursion, the Ghosts (i.e. Gaunt) are in hot water with their commanders, and are sent on a mission to retrieve the remains of Saint Sabbatt, the person who first led the conquest of the Sabbatt worlds system, and was canonised as a result. It does at first look like a typical hero's journey type of story, but this does not mean its a bad book. As usual, the characterisation is brilliant, and we even se Bragg take centre stage in some style, proving he is not as stupid as he appears at first glance. The book leads to a thrilling climax, and introduces two new characters, both of whom feature in future novels. As usual, this is Dan Abnett we are talking about, so the next thing you should do is buy/rent/download/borrow this book and all the others in this series and get reading!!!!
