I might rank this 4.5 but Agatha’s voice is a 5 all the way. I really enjoyed the short, succinct chapters stylistically and so many sentences just dripped with richness and beauty.

Narrative is a little bit plain, yet it is short enough for me to finish it.

“I had no idea that the church could break your heart. I could never have imagined, in those days, a feeling big enough, strong enough, to take me from it. I could never have imagined giving up.”

I enjoyed this story, one which the author states is 'not a losing faith story, but a falling out of love story.' The complexities of Catholic religious life is on display through the life of Agatha, a young sister. She loves the friendship and community of her sisters, but the hypocrisies and inadequacies of the Catholic Church weighs on her. The story holds the gifts of a life of faith lived in community and service, alongside the harms of a religious institution which fails to live up to its own ideals, all through a character who tenderly holds it all within herself.
