(I received an ARC digital copy in exchange for an honest review so here are my opinions)

I really enjoyed this book. Ideally I would have rated it 3.5 ⭐️s but Goodreads doesn’t do that so I round up.

Starting with my favorite things about this. The storyline and plot for this book were absolutely amazing. I loved the entire basis of this novel. I loved the characters and the relationships I felt they have/had.

Now as to the reason for my rating, as amazing as the storyline was I felt like I was lost in the beginning for the first 45% of the book. Not that I didn’t understand but it was action after action and I would find myself just confused on how I from one place to another so quickly. And although that may sound negative I want to stress that it was all so entertaining and I enjoyed all the dialogue even then. I would stop and reread parts to realize the transitions. I do read a lot of fantasy and sometimes I know it takes me a while to embrace a new world. I agree some of the other reviews that this could have used more world building, that probably would have helped me stay in the story instead of rereading.

The triumph of the story is the main character in my opinion. She is relatable in how she handles her emotions and she is funny in a sarcastic way and she is strong. I liked watching things unfold from her pov as she was learning things, we did too.

As a debut novel I think this book is more than worthy of a read and I am excited for what the author writes next. It’s such a promising story and I need to know what happens.

I am sure based on her feedback that she is going to build on the world, the dragons, and the characters even if she hadn’t planned to before. I had seen the author on Tiktok ask for ARC readers and I had never been one before…. but as she explained her story I knew it was something I had to at least apply for lol.

If you are a fan of dragons, enemies to lovers, sarcastic characters, and fantasy. I think you would like this book.

This was a great debut and I can’t wait for book 2.

Freya is a spitfire from chapter 1 and never loses her spunk through the end. The banter, the twists, the turns had me turning the pages all day until I got to the end.

If you love dragons, magic, battles and betrayal then pick up this book!

Fabulous book! It was a great quick read and left you ready for the book two. Absolutely loved the witty banter between characters and the fast paced storyline. Definitely a must read for those fantasy lovers out there.

Kay C Rice did an amazing job, she better be writing that second book, it is definitely in high demand!

Wow, from the very beginning this book captivated me. It's a real page turner and extremely difficult to put down. This amazing fantasy is full of twists, turns, betrayals, and a feisty, strong-willed female main character. Oh! There's also dragons!!! This book made me cry, laugh, and exclaim, "WHAAAT" multiple times.

I saw one of the other arc readers say that Kay Rice is the love child of Sarah J. Maas and Rebecca Yarros and I could not agree more with that statement. I strongly recommend this book to everyone and cannot wait for book 2.

I received this book as an ARK
I loved the story and the characters love the banter they had back and forth. It was definitely a unique plot and not as predictable. Only reason it didn’t get 5 stars for me is I was lost several times and didn’t understand how we got from here to there. But I loved the story and I’m ready for the next one!

The bones are definitely here but the execution was severely lacking.

We are introduced to so many characters but there isn’t anything to help us distinguish them from each other. They are one dimensional with no real background which kept me from connecting or caring.

Another big issue was the pacing. It felt like I was thrown into the book halfway through and expected to already understand what came before. The writing is choppy and disconnected - I found myself having to go back and reread passages multiple times because I got lost getting from point a to point b as there was no real transition. One second the character would be getting ready for bed and then the next line suddenly had them engaged in a full fledged battle three days later.

This fantasy world is big and the issues seem complex. I wish there had been more background information given so I could feel fully immersed.

Basically what I ended the book with was -

The bad guy is bad because he’s bad.
The good girl is good because she’s good.
And dragons.

5⭐️ I received this book as an ARC. Mark of Ancients is the perfect short fantasy to get you out of any reading slump! While it is a shorter book, there is no lack of action that leaves you clinging for more. With enemies to lovers, found family, slow burn, AND dragons and element manipulation, what more can you want from a book. Now the dreadful wait for book 2!

This was really good for a debut novel, and I will definitely continue reading from this author. There were parts where the scenes changed so abruptly that I thought I skipped something and I would be confused. It took me a while to get through but I am so glad I didn’t let my reading slump win and powered through. Definitely worth the read

This book built me up, broke my heart, put it back together, then broke it again. I need book 2, like, yesterday.
