I loved the inner dialogue about science and religion. As a person who has always struggled with balancing the two, it was refreshing to read the inner turmoil of someone else.

I didn’t love the ending. I found it to be very abrupt. I also would have liked more closure on the relationship between Gifty and her mother.

I also agree with another reviewer that the observations made by Gifty read almost like a YA novel instead of a book for adults.

Ugh, Where do I begin?
Such a beautiful book about faith, science and mental health. I throughly enjoyed reading this book as someone who is in the sciences and has struggled with my mental health and belief.
My review can’t do justice to this book. It was an easy read and I enjoyed the writing style and how she intertwines Gifty’s past with her present as she grapples to questions and tries to find answers about God, her brothers addiction and death and her mother’s struggle with depression.
Beautifully written!

Phenomenally written. The audio was captivating and I fell in love with Gifty and her family. Highly recommend.

So, so beautiful. Gyasi tackles a host of complex issues (the relationship between faith and science, religion, addiction, family, identity, and more) in a way that is both profound and deeply personal. This will be one of my favorites of the year.

This book crept up on me in the best way. It left me wanting more— perfectly fitting for this book and its themes. Gyasi is brilliant.
