i don't think i can give this book a star rating. i cried a lot. the topics were heavy and difficult to talk about. overall i liked it but it left me less than what i wished for.

Yaa Gyasi writes from a place of deep truth as she grapples with her own experiential narrative of familial love, spirituality and science, addiction, and grief.

A quote that resonates with me: “For years I hadn’t been able to reconcile wanting to feel good with wanting to be good…”

Honestly, I’d say 4.5 stars. The book is thought-provoking, powerful, and so touching. Its also about my personal favorite topics (depression, addiction, neuroscience, religion). I don’t honestly know how Yaa Gyasi does it! Each chapter left me still processing.

The only con is that the chapters don’t “flow” like a traditional story. Each chapter finished so powerfully I had to sit back and think about each one which halted the pace and then I realized I wasn’t desperate to devour the book and find out what happens.

This was difficult to rate because I savoured the writing and thought it was brilliant story-telling, but I also found it a bit slow and difficult to get into.
