So I decided to give this one another try. And I actually enjoyed it! It's one of the prequel series to the original series, according to the author. The art style was by the same author but was much newer than the 90s art because she had been working on manga for a long time. Because of that, the story and characters were more fleshed out.

The story was actually pretty interesting and maybe MORE interesting than the original series. It reminds me of a high fantasy epic. But with cliches and (sorta) annoying characters.

The characters were okay. I liked the main character Takiko but didn't like that she had a crush on this adult guy. (I'm trying not to hurl) Limdo.... Well. They are something! They can switch their body's gender and this causes some issues but is a pretty good plot device. I didn't really connect with them since, even though we were given enough time to and there were some epic scenes. Soren was pretty cool. I liked his cloak. Chamka was actually pretty interesting to me. Yeah there were a few !! scenes, but they got resolved fast. He seems really sweet.

The art was more sure of itself than the original one. The author knew what she wanted and knew how to do it. It still has some 90s feel about it, but it doesn't feel like it's from the Sailor Moon era. One problem I have is the faces. They feel flat in 3/4 perspectives.

All in all, I'm glad I gave it a second chance! I'm totally reading this for Chamka but the story is pretty interesting too!

Initial Review:

Lol what is this? This doesn't match anything of the original series. Not even the art. Maybe try again later.

A review & a placeholder for the entire series.
An incredible, moving work of shojo.
If you can only pick one to read between the original FY & Genbu, for the better experience choose Genbu.

So good... and I'm so glad that it's finished so I can just read it straight through, even though the end is going to make me bawl like a big baby.

First book finished in 2019!

This was a beautiful volume. The story arc was well-paced and felt continuous and the artwork was gorgeous and fully enhanced the plot. It felt like I was watching a movie, when I got caught up in the scenes — so absorbing was the combination of artwork and dialogue. I got lost a little in the fight scenes, but I think that’s more due to me being a n00b manga reader than anything else. I liked that Takiko was a strong female protagonist — I laughed out loud when, several times throughout the book, she fought with/beat up male characters and had them begging for mercy. Not something you usually see in books so it’s a nice change of pace.

There were some sensual scenes in here that made me glad it was rated T+, but they were appropriate and honestly, tastefully done. Nothing overly/inappropriately sexual or graphic, and the sensuality definitely contributed to my sense of Takiko fitting this quote from Brene Brown: “strong back, soft front, wild heart.” So often female protagonists have one attribute or the other, but rarely do we see women shine and exhibit fierceness, tenderness, and wildness all in one. Yuu Watase managed to show us those attributes in Takiko and for that I’m very grateful.

Excited to read more in this series!

Was trying out holding books online from the library and got this series rather than the first FY series. So I figured why not read it. It's been almost 10 years since I read FY but it's good so far.
