Felix Ever After has been on my TBR list for years, I found a special edition last month and that was the right time to finally read it. It matters so much to me to read about character that helps me feel more like myself, that opens the possibilities of gender. Felix’s journey feels real and brings hope.

A reminder of how painful it was to be a teenager in high school, but with a happy ending.

I read this book all day and stayed up until 2am reading it! Pretty cute and not too long. The main character Felix is already out and proud which is different to a lot of queer YA lit that deals with the anxieties of coming out to yourself, friends, and family. It was neat to read from the perspective of someone already out, adjusting, and transitioning into adulthood with ongoing self-discovery.

Things I liked about this book:
- SO MANY important issues were brought up and handled with tact – dysphoria, homophobia, transphobia, deadnaming, racism, privilege, othering and acceptance, family and romantic relationships, feminism, marginalization, bullying, insecurities, anxiety about the future
- We don’t ever learn Felix’s deadname – this is great! It isn’t a right as a reader to know either (just the same as the characters in the book)
- The importance vs the unimportance of labels was addressed
- Things didn’t work with Declan – they were pretty rude to each other earlier on so I’m glad the author didn’t turn them into complete lovebirds

While reading, I kept thinking: “Is this really how seventeen year olds think? Since when do they have such deep thoughts?” These characters are so mature and immature at the same time in their transition to adulthood. They are navigating through so many issues that sometimes they slip and are hurtful to each other. They do such a good job of checking their privilege when this happens, I was impressed. I certainly didn’t do that at my age but then that is probably MY privilege coming out.

Figuring out your identity is such a big part of growing up for queer folk. I think the author did a great job of capturing the importance of Felix’s self-discovery and finding a label that works for him. Felix’s insecurities and feelings of embarrassment over still questioning his identity were realistic. It is hard to be true to yourself when you are not really sure what that looks like.

Before reading this book, I had read a few recommendations saying that I would like it if I liked Simon vs the Homosapien Agenda. While I wasn’t as much IN LOVE with this book as I was with Simon vs, it had a similar wholesome, cutesy feel. 4/5 stars.
