I absolutely love the story's focus on understanding your identity and learning to love and accept yourself, and how family and friends do their best to support that journey too. I will say the romance felt too surface level for what it was -- it was definitely more of a side story than the main theme, which I appreciated, I just wish the flow of it was a bit less rushed.
I really like this story for what it represents and I feel that there aren't enough books with trans rep in the YA genre. That is steadily changing every year, but even then, they are so underrepresented in Booktok and Booktube (at least that I've seen); as well as the Indigo bestsellers and recommended lists. So when I saw this book in a Most Anticipated Spring Releases article in 2020, I knew I had to read it. One thing this book does really well is representation. As a cis, white woman, I am not experiencing the same thing as Felix will experience; but I still felt like I could understand how he felt wanting to be loved and accepted, even when I don't experience anything that he does. This book deserved to be read because I think transphobia is so inherent in our society still, even when it's not outwardly hateful or intended.
As far as writing quality goes, I think it's better than average for YA, but there were still parts that bothered me. However, I keep in mind that this is something I would have loved when I was in high school, and I have developed a much more critical literary gaze since I'm almost in my third year of university, so it is not from the author's lack of talent in the slightest. It is perfect for the audience in which it was written, which is teenagers, and I still very much enjoyed it.
