💗Something I Loved: Quite literally… everything. The expansive queer representation. The diverse cast of characters. The realistic portrayal of the messiness of young love and self exploration and heartbreak. All of it was so well done, the story itself captivating and powerful, and I couldn’t help but fall for these lovable characters… real, flawed, and imperfectly human.
🫤Something I Would Have Changed: If I’m being nit-picky, there were some minor grammatical things that in no way affected my overall enjoyment, but did give me pause. Otherwise nothing. This book has my heart.
🥰Favorite Moment: It has to be the Pride parade; the culmination of every longing glance and not-so-friendly touch between Felix and ____ (What? It’s a love triangle. I’m not going to just give it away). But I also really adored the heart to heart between Felix and his dad, who from a teenagers perspective never tried hard enough to understand Felix, and from an adults perspective was trying his best to be supportive despite not understanding so much of what was going on with his son.
🌶️Spiciest Scene: This is YA so although there are several mentions of sex and a couple of fairly innocent kisses, it’s sweet, not spicy.
📚Standalone vs. Series: Standalone.
📖Would I Recommend: 100%. FEA is funny and emotional, full of hope, love, and forgiveness. It wasn’t perfect… or I guess I should say Felix wasn’t perfect, often making hurtful decisions and sabotaging his own happiness… but it was real and raw and inspiring. It made me feel like a teenager again, full of such intense emotions about… well, everything, and it simultaneously made me a little sad for my younger self, who lacked this type of representation, and thrilled for the queer kids of today. This type of rep is truly life changing and I can’t recommend this book enough.

great book, i enjoyed it even when the characters kept bringing up HP. also the translation used transsexual instead of transgender and that also irked me a little. but otherwise it held me by heart<3 as a transmasc myself, i felt the connection to the mc

Life for Felix is very complicated. He not only deals with the insecurities that every teenager faces, but has to deal with fear of rejection from peers and family because he is black, trans, and queer. Who will accept him? How can he find love? While Felix’s dad has a hard time with his transition - he doesn’t call him by his name, Felix, preferring to call him “kid”, and sometimes calls him by the name given to him by birth. I can imagine how difficult that must be for a parent. However, his dad is VERY supportive of Felix. Beyond all of that, this story is also about a kid whose past has been exposed at the school, and his quest to find out who it was. Felix learns a lot about himself and his continuing struggle with his identity, his art, friendships, love, and learns to become comfortable with who he is.. Popsugar reading challenge: a book about gender identity.
