Long winded , interesting at start but gets very boring, especially towards the end.
This book was really good and very interesting. It was sort of like historical fiction in that you are enjoying a fictional plotline, but learning about another time and place at the same time. This book is like that but about former first lady Laura Bush. I feel like I learned a bit about her actual life and some insight about the Bush Dynasty as well. Very interesting.

There were times I felt the observations petty/insignificant, but overall, it was an enjoyable read. I liked that much of the book took place in the midwest, and found the descriptions accurate more often than not. I felt that by the end of the book, I knew the main character and understood the contradictions and conflicts in her life.
A quick, fun, read. While it is light reading, it's easy to get caught up in the story and the Sittenfeld is a VERY GOOD writer. Even somewhat guilty reads can benefit from good writing.
Much of the book is set in Madison, Wisconsin, and Sittenfeld's ruminations on the Midwest are sincere and accurate to one who is familiar with the area. Always helps to be able to picture the lay of the land in your head when reading as well.
I was also able to relate to issues of struggling with relationships that involve two very ambitious people, so her insights on this were appreciated. While I'm certain to not make the same choices the main character does, Sittenfeld has poignant insights on sacrifice in relationships.
I found the book to kind of fizzle out by the time she got to the White House years, but all in all, a really good book.

This may be a long book but it didn’t feel like it - I was completely gripped and fascinated throughout. Definitely didn’t expect to become so invested in a (semi-fictional) retelling of a previous First Lady but Alice’s characterisation, along with all the others, was so vivid and compelling. Dying to read Rodham now!

Love that I’m seeing reviews (albeit from years ago) of people who are offended and think it’s trashy that there are sex scenes in a book about someone’s life, especially because it’s based on the life of a former First Lady, who herself has had two children. Y’all are soooooo funny for that.
I do feel there was a lot of empathy and careful handling put into the fictional storytelling surrounding real life events. The final act is uncomfortable but only because there is a bit of finger pointing to the audience (white middle class liberal women).
