"Princess of Mars" - I'm no longer a John Carter virgin. Will enjoy digging into the other books at my leisure. It's trash, but entertaining trash.

Grade: A

I read this book after seeing the recent film adaptation. If I were rating the movie, I would have given it 5 stars, but this is the book so...

The language in this book is archaic. However, it does move along quickly if you can understand what the writer is saying. It's not an easy afternoon read and you can clearly tell when it was written because the storyline lacks the more connected flow of better books today. There are a bit too many "conveniences" and "coincidences" in the story for my taste, but again, that reflects when this book was written.

Even though the author often used excessively flowery descriptions and word choice, there is plenty of beauty in this book and it deserves to be in the ranks of classic literature.

I would recommend this to people interested in the "forerunners" of our modern Science Fiction and those who aren't bothered by the old-fashioned language of the early twentieth century.
adventurous lighthearted fast-paced

Just a good old-fashioned fun pulp sci-fi book! Cheesy-ness galore.

I would like to read the rest of the books in the series. I would also like a spin-off series, featuring Woola.

classic adventure-sci-fi. interesting especially because you can see how this influenced later sci-fi writers

Its always with some trepidation that I approach books that more rightly belongs in my teenage years and even more in this case where the story is more than 100 years old.

My only prior knowledge of Burroughs is that he created Tarzan and that only on a very superficial level as I never read any of the books.

John Carter was known to me as I watched the Disney movie some years back and quite enjoyed it.

The book was a pleasant surprise from the start, the narrative is well constructed, the language is rich and varied and at no time did the story feel aged, which is kind of impressive for a 100 year old SF/Fantasy novel.

Even though the story has aged well, it’s hard to say the same of the way women and all non white american’s are described, but I allow some leeway to older stories as long as it’s not a major theme.

All in all a interesting meeting with a novel that has inspired quite a few others, i fully intend to read the next novel as well.

Great overall... grand ideas, though too little detail in certain plot elements. Definitely a SciFi classic.

A riotously fun read. Sure, Burroughs quickly glosses over some plot issues, but it is a fun and fascinating thrill ride.
