Would give it 4 stars but there were a few misogynistic parts that didn't sit well with me.
Will I read the sequel: likely but not a priority since the third book hasn't come out yet.

Oh my god, it took me WAY too long to read this incredible book. I’m kicking myself for leaving this on my TBR for as long as I did. What an amazing, well crafted story. I particularly enjoyed the split perspective, with interludes in the tavern.

I also have the hugest crush on Bast, woah. That final chapter was a whirl. He captured my heart way back when he first revealed himself as fae - and then he tore it into tiny pieces and taped them back together in letters that spelled “I heart Bast” when he used his full Fae form to be all threatening to the Chronicler. Also, do I ship Bast x the Chronicler? What? Shhh this book was so much fun but wow am I invested in the interlude side characters.

After multiple readings, I find this book to be more about the process of reading it than the grander world it builds or the story it tells. It’s a story about stories, and it uses the medium of stories to great effect. But if you’re here for a complete series and care about the conceptual nature of the lore… maybe go somewhere else. It’s an amazing experience and wonderfully crafted and I don’t know if I’ve ever enjoyed reading a book quite as much as this.

When I read a review saying that this book was really easy to read thanks to Rothfuss' writing style, despite how long it is, I was skeptical... I was wrong ! I really flew effortlessly through this story.
The characters and their dynamics are complex and overall very well done and Kvothe's narration is witty. The world and magic system are original and well developed while staying quite mysterious.
I really enjoyed the contrast between story and reality, Kvothe's (unreliable) legendary image as a hero versus his humain flaws... or at least the ones he lets us see in the story he weaves for the world to see. Indeed, he himself admits that he's always used and fed the rumors about him, so in the end, isn't this story the final one he crafts ?
