I’m about to have to DNF this. Is it ever explained what mechanical animation is?
From what I’m understanding of the storyline they’re supposed to be on rival sides of science but they’re both doing the same thing? Like animating things by magic. I’m so confused. Why are they rivals? It sounds like they’re doing the same research?
It’s literally my job to interpret and analyze literature and this is frustrating me to no end that I can’t figure it out.

This read like a first, undeveloped draft: lots of potential, but the fantasy world isn't at all fleshed-out, nor are the characters. And there are a lot of typos...
Disappointing.
Disappointing.

This book in one sentence: Lord Andrea has difficulty securing funding for his unpopular branch of magical study, and he blames mechanical animation and its creator, the Marquis de la Marche who is both charming and infuriating.
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐
Steaminess: 🌶️🌶️🌶️
My recommendation: This story is cute, I enjoyed the trans representation, the enemies-to-lovers and the little bit of world building that was included. It just didn't feel like quite enough. It's fairly short, and although there is some really interesting ideas, especially regarding magic, it leaves you wishing the story was longer, that there was a little more depth.
Tropes: enemies-to-lovers
Content warnings: transphobia

This was a lovely little novella! It had elements that I love in historical fiction, with hints of magic and a hint of steampunk in the corners. A Matter of Disagreement was a quick read that kept me smiling and kept me happy. We need more romances like this!

An early effort that would be improved now by basic copyediting, lest people abandon an author if they start from his beginnings.
