This was cute and I loved the aesthetic (kinda French art circa 1940s) but it didn't quite click for me. I understood the author's intention to make the conversations seem like the dialogue was translated from French, so some of the phrases seemed a little off or stilted, but it was kind of distracting to me. I also never really connected with Bandette as a character so that made it less enjoyable of a read for me. I did love the art a lot though, very fun and whimsical. This was a good read but nothing that got me super excited.

I finished this book with a, "meh," kind of feeling. It was O.K but not what I was expecting. There was parts that I could see the appeal in, but for the most part it fell flat. It wasn't what I would call volume 1 material. This was because,
1) I didn't like the main character, Bandette
2) The story gave no background
3) I didn't like Bandette

I think getting to know the main character is really important in the first volume, and hopefully liking them. But, for me Bandette seem self-absorbed, and un-relatable. Maybe if I knew a little more about her I could understand her, but this story was mostly action and focused on the secondary characters. So, I don't feel inclined to continue with this series because I wasn't fond of our "heroine" or the story itself.

I would rate this - for me, personally - somewhere around 2.5 - 3 stars. The artwork is rad and I kind of like the writing, but it's not all that new or clever. The production value is SUPER sleek. It has a vaguely Euro feel but is completely in English and there's no specific references or tags for anything actually European. It looks like it's translation of some older French comic - it is not - by calling up imagery of other famous Euro detectives and other older Euro comics without referencing anything directly. I think maybe Bandette is a bit too Mary Sue for me, kind of a cipher, and her "Presto!" thing even just in the first volume was a bit overused and immediately started to grate on me. (Like, you're never going to make "fetch" happen, so just give it up.) I can totally imagine that there's a 7-11-year-old girl audience who loves Matilda and Harriet the Spy and who totally would go for this, and if I were a parent of a kid that age, I might be so relieved to be reading something marginally more entertaining for adults than Barney that I would go nuts that this existed. But I don't think this is engaging enough for me, and I doubt I will read volumes 2 or 3.

Delightful tone and pacing. Great fun. Loved the character's élan (or, as she would say, "presto") and turns of phrase. The Euro-tinged art style is well-deployed and the colors/images play strikingly with both the graphic and dynamic.

re-read: May 2015. Just as light and sparkly and playful upon revisit. Irresistible.

I liked the art. It was a cute little story of a Parisian crime fighting but sometimes crime doing badass girl named Bandette. Entertaining, lighthearted read. I enjoyed it.
