This was a very quick read and rather entertaining but if I have to hear Domini talk about her biceps and pecs on more time I may just simply pass away. I love an unhinged fmc just as much as the next person but she was essentially
stalking her love interest the last half of the book.
I had a major problem with that, I feel like that scenario alone is a trigger for some people. I don’t feel like the author truly addressed the racism and xenophobia presented in the book. I saw the situation developing from a mile away and yet we were just suppose to accept it and with
Jolene calling the police on Sharif and getting him arrested and more people of color deported all because she thought the protest MAY be a bit violent. I feel like the whole time Jolene was virtue signaling and our FMC was still chasing after her? That didn’t sit well with me. Not mention the white knighting that Jolene was trying to pull. Ugh. I really feel like she was not challenged enough.

Sorry that half of this review is essentially spoilers for the plot but there were some plot points I felt needed to be addressed deeper and to combat those ideologies. This is the authors first book so I’m interested to see what others she releases in the future.

I enjoyed this one a lot, despite the massive amounts of mixed reviews. I love reading and watching content about unhinged women. I think it appeals to me more than the unhinged men trope (i.e. Taxi Driver, which this book is a modern reversal of) is that women are not at the top of the hierarchy of oppression, so it doesn't feel meaningless, unwarranted, and solely dangerous. To me, it feels more justified. Add layers of other injustices like racism and classism, and you start to unpack intersectionality and why this book appeals to me so much more than Taxi Driver does. But maybe I am just an unhinged woman as well..

Short chapters, very funny. I listened to it, which went really quick (6.5 hrs), and was ready by the author. Don't be a Jolene and tip your drivers.

in your driver is waiting, priya guns packs a punch to the gut with an unrelenting, stream of consciousness writing style, examining how resistance can be glorified if, and only if, the resistor fits within the context that is deemed appropriate (i.e. white, peaceful, has “done the work”) by western standards. but if that person doesn’t fit the mold, isn't neatly packed into this box, if they dare to exist in black or brown bodies, if they are angry and organizing, and demanding more than “the work” - then it’s considered violent, threatening, and dangerous.

i highly recommend listening to the audiobook. guns delivers a fantastic performance, barreling off the page and into the stark reality that this book aims to confront. there is lasting significance in guns social commentary that seems particularly poignant today amidst our current political atmosphere and the global call for a ceasefire in gaza.

This modern-day reimagining of Taxi Driver blisters right along Damani's wild, self-destructive path, but I felt like it pulled back a little too much in what should have been its biggest moment. Loved the ending, though.

A solid commentary on how our various social problems are connected, and especially about how one must be wary of performative activism. The only downside is I didn't really buy the romance.
Even if I hadn't known Jolene would betray her somehow, I wouldn't have gotten why Damani was so obsessed with her, and if I did, Jolene calling the cops on her friends would have packed even more of an emotional punch, rather than having me just grumble, "I knew it..." I'll also admit the openended ending didn't really work for me.

In spite of those flaws, this is highly recommended for those looking for catharsis as it seems like society is descending into its worst impulses.
