I enjoyed this one a lot, despite the massive amounts of mixed reviews. I love reading and watching content about unhinged women. I think it appeals to me more than the unhinged men trope (i.e. Taxi Driver, which this book is a modern reversal of) is that women are not at the top of the hierarchy of oppression, so it doesn't feel meaningless, unwarranted, and solely dangerous. To me, it feels more justified. Add layers of other injustices like racism and classism, and you start to unpack intersectionality and why this book appeals to me so much more than Taxi Driver does. But maybe I am just an unhinged woman as well..

Short chapters, very funny. I listened to it, which went really quick (6.5 hrs), and was ready by the author. Don't be a Jolene and tip your drivers.

This modern-day reimagining of Taxi Driver blisters right along Damani's wild, self-destructive path, but I felt like it pulled back a little too much in what should have been its biggest moment. Loved the ending, though.

I'm not sure if Your Driver is Waiting is a spin on Taxi Driver or not, although I've never seen Taxi Drive so I suppose it doesn't matter either way. Regardless, Gun's novel features Damani, is a queer Sri Lankan  rideshare driver who's just barely getting by while dealing with grief after her father's death and taking care of her mother. The story revolves around Damani's life and her brief (but ultimately chaotic) love affair with a wealthy white (savior) woman named Jolene. I believe the book is labeled as satire but, I don't know, Jolene's whiteness seems pretty spot on (performative allyship, taking up a ton of space,
calling the cops
). There is explicit sex scenes, which i'm only mentioning incase folks listen to the audiobook version without headphones at times, lol.
