The author creates a main character, Damani, who is strong, queer, brave, fearless, but flawed. Even though she had the makings of a fabulous hero, it missed the mark with the first half dragging.  The storyline and writing style were somehow lacking for me. Some of the language was unnecessary and was there for shock value rather than adding to the commentary. Damani was obsessed with her body and couldn't stop talking about it, which gets annoying after the first few pages but continues until the end of the book. I desperately wanted to like this novel, and I hope as white cis woman I haven't missed the point as I want to be a supportive ally. I get that it's a raw social commentary and it should have been very powerful, but its impact was lost on me, especially as I couldn't connect with Damani or her love interest, the spoilt white rich woman, who I wanted to slap. The second half didn't make up for the first, and I was left disappointed. Not for me, sorry
