A new favorite book for sure. Rerating it on StoryGraph. It is a flawed book at times, the racism in it is inexcusable and I wouldn't blame anyone for not wanting to pick it up because of it. I enjoyed the book a lot (I know I say that with a lot of privilege), but by no means does my five-star rating not mean I don't recognize the flaws and racism in it.

i really loved it. i could see myself in esther and her mistakes so i felt very maternal over her and may have liked her more than others who find her to be cynical and as asshole

I haven't read a single book in such a long time and this was such a great book to dive into the world of reading again. It's been a day or so since I finished reading it and I can't still wrap my head around everything that has occur in this book. 
It was such a captivating book I must say. The descriptions were immaculate and the plot kept me on my toes. I loved Sylvia Plath used flashbacks and seemingly simple events to let us know more about Esther and understand her more as a whole. And how she described Esther's deteriorating mental health and later on, her recovery. It didn't seem all of a sudden. We all saw where Esther was heading to. 
Overall, love this book. One of my new favorites indeed. Will definitely read this again although I don't think this book is for everyone.
