Without Remorse

Tom Clancy

I think John Kelly wins the award for the least relatable protagonist ever. I know he suffered a lot, but one single save-the-cat moment would have helped.

I picked up a used copy of this online after reading about Rainbow six (which I read going on 17 years ago). The premise of John Clark, along with the upcoming movie had me read this as a palette cleanser between sci fi/Fantasy books. Tom Clancy is a great writer in that he is entertaining. The book flows as a great action movie, and he manages to weave a lot of very absurd situations all into one tight story.

One thing Tom Clancy is pretty weak at writing is women. It's very obvious they are all objectified in his books, and some of the character descriptions really wouldn't pass a publisher's tests these days (I would hope not). He doesn't glorify war QUITE as much as I remember, but I do prefer when authors don't try and make war out to be a good thing (especially the Vietnam war...).

I'm definitely going to re-read Rainbow six after this for an entertainment factor.

Goede thriller, soms wel heel technisch, maar steeds onderhoudend.
De ‘actualiteit’ waar het zich tegen afspeelt, is de oorlog in Vietnam. Het nadeel van boeken in de kringloopwinkel te kopen

I had read this book years and years ago and largely had forgotten the story. "Mr. Clark" may be one of my all-time favorite fictional characters and it is interesting to read the back story of one that makes many appearances in the Tom Clancy-Jack Ryan universe. Suffice to say, Clark was chosen quite readily for his position in the Clancy-realm CIA and was an appropriate one. While there are two or three subplots that roll into the main mission that Clark finds himself on, Clancy proved that he was the master of resolving very large plots very well.

Maybe this illuminates some of the darkness in my own heart, but I could hardly put this book down until I finished it. Without Remorse is a who-dunnit with amazing action-adventure, well-written characters, and often dark psychological drama. It showcases John Kelly, the Vietnam vet and Special Forces legend who by the end of the novel becomes John Clark, CIA superspy. If you like the Jason Bourne novels, this is another in that vein, and one you won't be able to put down.

When Tom Clancy died last year I realized I had never read one of his books. I loved the story about how he became an author and admired his determination. I figured I owed tribute to such a prolific writer and so picked up this one to read. This is not my kind of book, but I found myself hooked. The plot is clever and the main character likeable, although not particularly believable. I thought the dialogue a bit stiff but it was a good read, if you can follow all the characters and the military jargon. A bit too violent at times for me and definitely full of military details that I didn't understand. But, I liked the book enough to want to read the sequel, although I probably won't because it is 750 pages!
