As alluring as a newly published work about an intense childhood friendship is, there’s clearly a reason De Beauvoir chose not to publish this short novel while she was alive. It’s extremely personal, despite the pseudonyms, and if she had really wanted to pass it on to the world she probably would’ve just included these stories in her memoir.

this is a semi-autobiographical novel about de beauvoir and her childhood best friend. it was sweet and sad and lovely! the style 0f this felt like elena ferrante meets jane austen, but set in paris. (p.s. margaret atwood TEARING on jean-paul sartre in the introduction was so funny to me)
