I enjoyed this book, especially Talan's character but had a hard time with the pacing -- lots of plot holes, editing problems, and a rushed ending made this book drag a bit and lose stars for me.
I loved that Talan turned out to be a misunderstood hero (as I suspected in book 2), but I wish that they hadn't completely taken away his darkness - by the end of the book he was basically a marshmallow following Nia's lead. And to completely give up the entire plot about ruling for a quiet life in Avalon while the commoners establish a republic seemed pretty dumb to me. What happened to all the prophecies? And Nia's heritage? The importance of her being Lady of the Lake and the rightful queen was just abandoned, along with Talan's character arc. Then there's Mordred, who is basically just a Kooky grandpa welcoming strangers to his island by the end.  Mordred's character development made absolutely no sense, and I have no idea why the party at the end was such a big deal. Also, the final battle scene was pretty anticlimactic....after 3 books and years of war, the king and prince just fly around on dragons for awhile while Nia narrates from a distance, and then the king disappears? That was pretty lame.

But all those criticisms aside, this was a fun read and I enjoyed Nia and Talan.

some quick fire thoughts after finishing

- rushed and disjointed, didn't feel as well written as the prior two
- stakes never felt truly high
- plot holes and plot armour
- there was talk of prophecies that we all just forgot about I guess?
-why did we make Mordred into some quirky, lost grandpa?

- TALAN. literally nightmares incarnate was done so dirty. just becomes a soft golden retriever and I hate that for him. bloody Nia is more evil than him at the end
