"A society that devours its own young deserves no automatic or unquestioning allegiance."

I can't believe I had not read this book before now. A superbly written evocation of a time and based on real events. Barker really brings the real life characters to life and gives us the reader a sense of the emotional toll that war, and WWI in particular took. I don't want to write too much more for fear of giving away the plot, but I highly recommend this to fans of well written literature.
