Regeneration

dark emotional reflective sad tense medium-paced

Pat Barker's Regeneration is a solid historical novel. I don't think it is amazing or revolutionary, but it is a very deftly drawn psychological portrait of men in a mental hospital during WWI. The characters are quite human and complexly rendered, and Barker is able to wring a lot of pathos out of wartime trauma.

I just don't have much to say about it. It's good. Barker's modern sensibility, specifically highlighting the lives of women and homosexuals during WWI, offers a bit of freshness to what could be dull subject matter. I will say, though, that I am not convinced that Barker needed to incorporate real people in the novel. I don't know how much depth it's adding. We'll see. Hopefully, some of my reservations will be allayed by the subsequent two novels in the series.

Interesting story about the experience of a soldier in a military hospital. Studied this in depth in college.

i found this a bit tough to read at first and it’s very different to the type of book i usually go for, but i found myself getting really into it. i adapted to the writing style and though there were still parts i felt i had to reread to fully understand (i kept getting lost between the different names haha) i really enjoyed the book. prior is the best character by far. will defo be reading the second and third instalments soon.

Bit boring, but good if you’re interested in war

Surprisingly unpoetic writing for a story about 2 poets and way too many characters! Sometimes I felt as if the main character wasn't Rivers or even Sassoon but Prior (and I despised him)! Also it was rather boring and felt pointless at times...
