I'm not sure I completely understood it or appreciated it. I was certainly turned off by some of the medial treatment methods and approaches. I think there was a subtext or deeper idea I didn't quite get. But not a time period I usually read about so fairly unique and fresh.
This is a novel and fascinating insight into the effects of WWI. Factionalised through the stories of William Rivers, Siegfried Sassoon and Robert graves among others Barker puts together a moving portrait of the trauma and pointlessness of war. I will definitely read the rest of this trilogy
"he needed her ignorance to hide in. yet, at the same time, he wanted to know and be known as deeply as possible. and the two desires were irreconcilable."
"the ticking of the clock was very loud in the empty room. he lay back in the chair and closed his eyes. he was afraid to measure his sense of loss."
"'don't you have any sympathy for anybody else?'
are you suggesting i have any for myself?'"

I cannot be entirely sure that all of the five stars that I gave this book can be credited to the book itself. I believe some of the credit to be due to the wonderful adaptation that we've had performing at our theatre for three weeks this month.
I only know that I love this original text just as much. It was interesting to see the differences between the book and the play and I gained more detail and understanding from the book.
I am very interested in Sassoon and Owen now and am looking forward to reading further books in the series and further books about them independent of the series.

Starts off slowly but the end really shows the purpose of the novel. A really interesting look at war away from the front lines.

I really liked this trilogy when I read it over 10 years ago, and I love it more now. It hits so many things I am interested in, it's amazing.
I feel a bit bad, there are a lot of good reviews out there for this book, but I struggled with it. It is a fascinating subject but I just could not connect with any of the characters.
