An adventure-filled romance starring a wonderfully diverse cast of characters! This book had a lot crammed into it, so much so that I think some things got left by the wayside — the political machinations felt too obvious and fell by the wayside more often than not, the ending wrapped up far too easily, and Athlen as a character felt underdeveloped. I enjoyed my time in this world, and loved how much Tal grew as a character, but I think I'll ultimately forget about this book. It's a fun one — and one I may've enjoyed more as a young adult — and I'll definitely continue recommending FT Lukens! (Even if just for that absolute showstopper of a cover?!)

You know that book where a prince with hidden magic meets a SPOILER held captive on a pirate ship, and you spend the whole time going *smooshes faces together* "NOW KISS"

This was such a sweet love story, and the drama just kept ramping up all the way through the last chapter. Magic gay kids with supportive family systems? Sign me tf up!

2.5/5 stars

I was super disappointed in this one and really wanted to love it, but it was so poorly-paced and clunky. The first 30-40% were achingly slow to build to anything interesting, and then much of the climax and resolution happened at around the 75% mark. There were plot threads that seemed to go nowhere, or were barely explored, or resolved too quickly. Stilted and stiff dialogue and a lot of implications and things that should have been interesting were left unexplored or just scratched the surface. A book of potentially good ideas that were woefully underutilized.
adventurous funny hopeful lighthearted

It wasn't great? I don't know if it was maybe a bit too young for me? The pacing was weird and honestly not a lot even happened. Most of the characters were likeable though
