Enjoyable YA romance filled with adventuring out into the world, a mysterious boy who acts a little rougish but gifts trinkets, and a family/sibling group that prop up the main character and story so well.
It's a little fairy tale, a little "best of" tropes, and a little fast in spots but overall an intriguing world and a happy ending.

Very cute read. This is not an epic fantasy or anything. It's short and sweet with an interesting if plot and very cute characters. Those are really the strong point of this book.

There were like two instances...or decisions I guess...by the main characters that really do not make a lot of sense...like there was a very obvious much easier solution than the ones taken that would have been A LOT better...
BUT I can see how that would have made the overall story shorter/less good I guess so I can overlook it.

I would recommend this as like a short palate cleanser or like something to read if you're not up to starting anything big :)

fhjahkjfh the bastard child or whatever eloping with her handmaiden and fencing instructor is truly the mood of 2021

Synopsis: Tal is at sea on his coming of age tour when things go horribly wrong, and he is separated from his family. Feeling lost, alone, and hopeless, he meets who is possibly his only chance for survival, Athlen. Athlen is a mysterious boy with a bubbly personality, a kind heart, and a face Tal can’t look away from. The two will have to work together to save the kingdom and stop history from repeating itself.

Thoughts: This book has a similar feel to The Midnight Lie, but much more on the bright and upbeat side. I think Athlen and Tal had great chemistry and were fun characters overall, and I absolutely loved Kest, he just seemed like such a sweetheart! The sibling relationships overall were probably my favorite part about this book. I usually don’t care quite as much about the plot being super good in books that seem like they’re more about the romance, but I just really didn’t like the ending to this one, it felt very opportunistic and too easy. I also thought the big reveal was a little lame because it felt like something the reader wasn’t given the information to make a guess. But, overall, I think it’s a fun lgbt read that has a lot of fantasy elements!

A bit 'eh' in the beginning, but from the part where one realises which fairy tale retelling this is, I was sucked in (pun intended)

this was an incredible experience that id like to relive. im seriously contemplating if i should just read the book again, because it was that amazing.
we need more queer romances in a fantasy setting and ive been saying, shouting, yelling, screaming this for so. fucking. long. hopefully someone listens to me. but after this being my second f. t. lukens book, they have definitely become my favorite author. just the way they write is so easy to understand and suck you into the world they have thought into existence. i just love it. and their characters bring me HAPPINESS. athlen and tal ARE MY EVERYTHING. I WOULD DIE FOR EITHER ONE OF THEM AS LONG AS THEY'RE OKAY.
about the story, i cannot say anything other than I LOVE IT GIMME MORE and THANKS FOR NOT KILLING MY FAVS.
that's it, thank you your honour. <3

I raced through this book because i only had one evening to finish it - ans it was great for that. A fun, gay story about princes and magic and mermaids, but not too complicated. Nothing extraordinary or new, but enjoyable - and just like the authors other book, it delivers what it promises.
