I was so excited for this book because it has pirates, mages, mermaids, royalty, and a major political conflict. While the plot and characters did not disappoint, I struggled with the tendency for the author to "tell" rather than "show" the thoughts and emotions of their characters. So many things were plainly spelled out in a way that was kind of distracting and broke me out of the flow of the story. I also think this book could have benefited from either a sequel or about 200 more pages. There are so many major plot points that the book flies through - kidnappings, murder attempts, etc. - that could have been way more fleshed out. Additionally, there are many different parties and groups involved that could have used more context and development. It felt like the author was shooting for high fantasy but left several threads untied. That said, I enjoyed getting to know the characters and found the plot interesting and engaging.
