I liked this book enough that I'm continuing on with the series. It had a unique source for the conflicts present in the plot but sometimes the writing was a bit lacking. I'm hoping that as the series continues, the characters undergo more of a development than they did in this first book. Feist doesn't go into detailed descriptions of characters and surroundings that capture my attention as much as some of my favorite authors do.
Super cozy read at first, but I didn't like it so much after we get pulled away from Pug/Tomas and things just escalated super fast into the war. It feels like it becomes a completely different story. I was in it for the wholesome banter between the characters, not the descriptions of how the invading force is just kicking everyone's butts! It's really weird how the book starts off small with us knowing the names of the boys in charge of making sure people don't steal food from the kitchens and then whole towns get sacked in a sentence.
I'm also uncomfortable with the offworld aliens basically just being some kind of asian japanese/chinese mix of humanoids - like c'mon, you got dragons, trolls, goblins, dwarves, and elves (2 kinds!), in your world but somehow asians are the truly alien beings.
Bummed with how this book ended up being after halfway through, it gets like a 3.75 from me. I hope it gets back to the earlier vibes of this book in Magician: Master. Ultimately though it reads pretty quickly and I'm excited to continue the story to see how things go.
