This essay collection covers topics from Christianity to BDSM, I love variety. I was moved by her fear for her Black autistic brother having a run-in with a trigger happy cop. The above quote is from the essay I connected with most, detailing a relationship that resulted in Stealthing (non-consensual removal of a condom, which is absolutely sexual assault), gaslighting and stalking. I’ve always had a particular bee in my bonnet about men who lurk in the shadows waiting for you to change your mind about them. “The idea that if you keep showering a woman with gifts and telling her you know her mind better than she does, she’ll eventually succumb to your intentions…” Red flag behavior 🚩
It is my experience that people who actually LIKE me hear my no and are okay, because their goal was for me to like them back. When people who don’t actually like me hear my no, they don’t accept it because their goal was to WIN. I’m a symbol, a prize to be won, and breaking my will is a game. These are dangerous people. I’m grateful to Nichole for putting it on paper because we don’t talk about it enough.
