What I loved the most of this book was the romanticism of the English countryside and of poverty.
Now you may disagree and say but poverty isn't romantic and yes it jolly well is not! But when you live in poverty for sometime, the word luxury assumes a new meaning. Family is a luxury, a warm mug of coffee and a nice thick blanket is a luxury. And as it was for the Mortmains, "It was wonderful, of course-- ham with mustard is a meal of glory. "
On the other hand it was the very unromantic aspects of the story that brought it dear to me. Cassandra had a way of being brutally honest about everything and so perceptive, but still.managed to be quite the idiot. The plot took so many twists and turns I enjoyed every inch of it tremendously.

I really really loved this book. All the characters were interesting but especially Stephen and Cassandra. The description and feel of the English country is beautifully captured.
Honestly, I wasn't overly fond of any of the character except Stephen. For he is clearly the sweetest and most well intentioned and hard working and true. The rest are far more human and complicated. Perhaps Simon could be considered on par but I did not take great fondness to either of the Cottons. The story was surprising and the plot twist shocking. Everything about this book felt personal.
The last few lines were completely devastating.

I really enjoyed this book. It is a quaint coming of age story and was a nice read. It didn't end all tied up happy, but it ended appropriately for the book.
