Lots of humour and longing and English atmosphere, lovely classic, almost-gothic-but-not-quite vibes. A real treat, although it took me a long time to read. One to sink into rather than race through.
I absolutely loved this. It gave me vibes to Jane Austin, EM forester and little women. There’s a coming of age element and an incredibly engaging protagonist.
Cozy in places but without much substance...I feel like this would be a good read for anyone who's looking for an Austen-eque vibe but easy, without being dogged down with over-flowery and difficult language. Ultimately though I feel like I'll have forgotten the characters within a week and much of it is quite boring.

I felt like this had Austen vibes although it was set much later. In the same vein as Austen's novels it has a young female protagonist and the themes were around marrying for money, family financial struggles, sibling relationships and courting. Smith references Austen, with Rose our FMC's older sister wishing she could be in an Austen novel.
I believe Smith was very much inspired by Austen's novels, she even has named characters Cassandra, James and Thomas, which are three of Jane Austen's siblings. Smith wrote this book whilst living in the USA, homesick and pining for England and the descriptive prose around the setting is almost like a love letter to England, the beautiful scenery of Suffolk and the atmosphere of London.
It is a coming-of-age story which I love but it has unrequited love and cheating and some themes that I struggle with.
